Hello, Small Business Friends!

Did you know that starting from October 2024, all food and beverage products were supposed to require halal certification? However, President Joko Widodo has just announced a delay, pushing the mandatory certification to October 2026. Curious about what this means for your business? Let’s dive into the details!

What is Halal Certification?

Halal certification is proof that a product complies with Islamic guidelines and is safe for consumption by Muslim consumers. This certification is crucial to ensure that customers trust that the products they purchase are both halal and thayyib (good and wholesome).

Why is Halal Certification Important?

  • Government Requirement: It is regulated under Article 49 of Government Regulation No. 39 of 2021.

  • Consumer Trust: Provides a sense of security and comfort to Muslim consumers.

  • Market Access: Expand your reach to both domestic and international markets.

  • Competitive Edge: Halal-certified products are more trusted and sought after by consumers in Indonesia.

Who Needs Halal Certification?

  • Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) involved in producing, processing, or selling:

  • Food and beverages

  • Cosmetics

  • Medicines

  • Animal products and their derivatives

What Are the Requirements for Halal Certification?

To apply for halal certification, you’ll need:

  • A formal application letter

  • A registration form

  • Business owner information (including NIB – Business Identification Number)

  • Product name and type

  • Product data: Composition, raw materials, and production methods

  • Supporting documents: Such as distribution permits and other certifications

The Halal Certification Process

  • Online Registration: Via the BPJPH website

  • Document Review: Conducted by the Halal Inspection Agency (LPH)

  • Production Audit: Direct inspection of the production site

  • Issuance of Certification: After all requirements are met

Government Support

In a show of support for small businesses, the government has postponed the mandatory halal certification until October 2026. This gives businesses more time to prepare without feeling rushed.

Get A Head Start!

Take advantage of this delay and start preparing your documents and processes today. Ensure that your products are halal-certified so your business is ready to compete in the marketplace!
